Another successful party!

27 people total attendees! Usually about 9-10 guys in the room at any time. The max was 13 people around 8pm.

The Scene

Similar setup as last time: A hotel near Herald Square / Penn Station in New York City. One king-sized bed, a 3-person couch, a few chairs and other furniture that people sat on. It never felt over-crowded, even when there were 13 people there.

What’s new?

I always try to fine-tune the party in little ways to see what works and what doesn’t. Here’s what was different this time.

• Saved money on the room

Because check-in time isn’t until 4pm, I usually book the room for 2 nights just so that we can be there from noon to midnight. Sadly that doubles the cost. NYC hotels are notoriously expensive, so that wasn’t sustainable.

This time I booked the room for one night and asked for an early check in. The earlier check-in isn’t guaranteed so there was some praying involved.

That worked… I was able to get in by noon. Sadly when I arrived they said that the room wouldn’t be available until 2pm. I sent out a message saying that the party was delayed. As a result, nobody showed up for the first few hours and people that could only attend the first few hours just made other plans.

It also seems that many people never got the second message saying that the party was on (and how to find the room number). I apologize to anyone that didn’t attend because of that. I’ll try to find a better way to handle this in the future.

Lesson learned: Only advertise the party for the hours I’m sure we’ll have the room. Next time the party will probably start at 2pm, unless I happen to have another reason to book the room the night before as well.

• Better room layout

This room had a little hallway as you entered the room. This let people have a space to take off their coats, get the “welcome speech”, and chill a bit before they entered the party.

This worked very well! People were able to chill a bit when they arrived.

• RSVPs asked for an arrival time

When people RSVPed, the form asked them what time (which hour) they thought they would arrive and the likelihood that they would show up (on a rate of 1 to 10). This gave me enough data to predict how many people would attend.

Here’s what I predicted:

The blue shows the predicted number of people at each hour; the red shows the actual number of people at the party. I counted the number of people in the room every hour on the hour.

As you can see, the prediction was more accurate for the second half of the party. I think the delay ruined many people’s ability to attend.

My prediction would have been more accurate if I just subtracted 1/3rd of the attendees. In other words, if I just assumed that 1 out of 3 people were going to be no-shows, my prediction would have been more accurate. Here’s what that looks like:

• People tend to over-estimate whether they can attend by 33%.
• I should make the question clearer. I asked “How likely will you attend?” and gave people the choice of 1, 2, 3, … 10. The choices should have been 10%, 20%, 30%, … 100%. I think that would have helped people be more accurate.

For privacy reasons there are no photos at the party. However I do try to take a lot of pictures before anyone shows up.

Some technical notes.

I love being the “porn DJ” taking requests and keeping the crowd entertained for the entire party.

I’m very happy to announce that we didn’t have the video buffering problem we had last time. I think this is due to the fact that I upgraded my private wifi router to a faster model (5.0Ghz).

I used Chromecasts to send video to the two small screens. One big cable was run across the floor to the big screen. I didn’t tape it down, but people were pretty good about not stepping on it. The video projector was directly connected to a Chromebook.

I used more playlists than last time. If you recall, last time I was so busy picking videos that I didn’t have much time for fun. This time I used longer videos and playlists.

The day before the event I set up all the video equipment in my living room at home to test it. I was able to work out any configuration problems, power it all down, and pack it up as-is. When I got to the hotel I literally plugged it all back in, configured my private wifi router, and everything was working.

All the equipment, toys, and my clothes fit in a suitcase plus a travel case for the 2 video monitors that I bring. It looks like this:

Doing a test-run in my living room also allowed me to try some new things. For example, I tried a FireStick and a RokuStick but decided not to use either for the actual party. Neither had a Chromecast feature that worked well, nor did they have a PornHub app that permitted access to playlists.

Pornhub’s Chromecast implementation still could use some improvements. First, when playing a playlist it leaves full-screen mode after each video. I have to keep jumping up to double-click on the image to return to full-screen mode. I also wish the PornHub video viewer had all the same keyboard shortcuts as YouTube. Specifically “f” for full-screen, and “0” to rewind to the start of the video and start playing (this works whether the video was playing or paused).

One more technical note: I didn’t plan a meal break for myself. This was a mistake. I was starving and the food delivery people messed up. They cancelled on me, and I had to order from some other place. It took about 2 hours to get me something to eat. In the future I’m going to order ahead. A 12-hour party is probably too long and I should instead have 2 smaller parties with a meal break in between. It would also give me a chance to clean up the place a bit. A special shout-out to the people that went outside to meet the delivery guy (they aren’t permitted up into the hotel).

Arrival

When people arrived I welcomed them, gave them a quick tour and tried to make them feel comfortable. There is a closet for coats, a place for people to leave their shoes and bags, a bathroom to wash up in, and so on.

Attendees are offered a colored wristband: Green “yes!”, yellow (“maybe”) and red (“no!”). I also offered a blue for “I want to give head”… or as I explained it, “that’s if you want to give a BLUE job”. Ha ha… I’m a freakin’ comedian.

Most people picked yellow or green wristbands. One guy picked red because he didn’t want to be asked, but he asked others. I love how the wristbands make it easier for people to communicate their needs and desires. This is a big part of making people feel safe at the parties.

People usually took a moment to get adjusted but then found a seat and “got to work”.

FYI: While this party is “men only”, I do make an exception for a male-female couple that attends. She’s an experienced swinger and is very respectful of the guys that are gay.

I could use your help with two things:

1. An easier way to tell people the room number. I don’t know the room number until a few hours before the party starts. Telling people via txt and email isn’t working well. I think I should drop txt and go email only. Or… can you suggest a better way?
